Full Description
The former walled garden of Arabella House, to the immediate northwest of the house. It was presumably constructed around the same time as the main house, and so may be early-mid C19 in origin. The OS 1st Edition map shows the eastern wall to have abutted, and probably formed, the outer wall of most of the western wing of the large farmsteading to the east (see MHG64125). <1>
The site was visited by J Hooper in 2001 during a walkover survey in advance of a proposed water main renewal project between Shandwick Mains and Nigg. The garedn was described as being disused, and was constructed of course rubble of local yellow sandstone capped by simple rounded cope stones. The east wall was described as 'now gone' (though see below) and the interior was in use as a storage area for the adjacent farm. <2>
The farm complex, including parts that were later detached and converted to other use, is not considered curtilage listed to the main house, since it has ben demonstrated they were under separate ownership at the time Arabella House was listed in 1971. However, it is not clear if the former walled garden was also under separate ownership at the time and as such the remaining walls may remain curtilage listed to Arabella House. The west-facing wall of the converted southwestern end of the steading clearly shows it to have been previously lower before conversion and is probably a surviving part of the east wall of the walled garden [IS-L 25/04/2025].
