Full Description

A large farmsteading complex to the immediate north of Arabella House (see MHG8441). It was presumably built around the same time as the main house, and so may be early-mid C19 in origin. The OS Name Book describes Arabella as "..a very large farmstead consisting of a substantial dwelling house and extensive offices" (Book 25, 53). The OS 1st Edition map shows it to have been formerly larger to the north with two additional inverted 'L'-shaped wings, now demolished. <1>

The steading was visited by J Hooper in 2001 during a walkover survey in advance of a proposed water main renewal project between Shandwick Mains and Nigg. The complex included an enclosed cattle court, farm cottages and a mill. <2>

Photographs were taken in 2011 of the subsequently detached southwestern part of the western range in advance of proposed changes to the building, known as 'Durack House' thought at the time to be curtilage listed to Arabella House. The front (west-facing) wall of this building previously formed part of the eastern wall of the former walled garden of Arabella House (see MHG64126). <3>

Photographs were taken of the central portion of the eastern range of the steading in 2017 in advance of proposed conversion to form additional living accomodation to the already converted portion immediately to the south. <4>

The farm complex, including parts that were later detached and converted to other use, is not considered curtilage listed to the main house, since they were under separate ownership at the time Arabella House was listed in 1971 [IS-L 25/04/2025].
