Full Description
A shepherd's bothy and enclosures at Meanach.
This former shepherd’s cottage, now a bothy, is situated in a remote pass between Glen Nevis to the W and Loch Trieg to the E, a little over 200m N of the Abhainn Rath. It is a single storey 3-bay building, originally part of a longer range whose footings extend to the E. A series of enclosures are located nearby and the ruins of at least two other buildings are visible on vertical aerial photographs 37m NE and 64m SE of the bothy respectively.
‘Meananach’ is depicted as a roofed building and four enclosures on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire, sheet cxiii, 1872) and it was described at the time as ‘A dwelling house of one story thatched and in good repair with a small portion of arable land attached, a little north west of Luib Chaorich, it is the property of Lord Abingen’ with W Cuthberton as tenant (OS Name Book, Inverness-shire No. 45, p.147).
On the night of the 1881 census ‘Miananach’ was occupied by shepherd John MacDonald (37), his wife Mary (36), their three daughters Sarah (8), Margaret (5) and Mary (1), and their nephew Donald Hay (14).
