Full Description

An archaeological survey of the Glencripesdale National Nature Reserve was commissioned by Scottish Natural Heritage and undertaken by J. G. Robertson in 1999.

Site 37. Stone wall, which curves round the back of a natural terrace, high up (220m ASL) on the NE bank of Allt a' Chamais Shalaich. From the edge of the steep-sided gorge of the stream, the wall runs to the NNW for 50m, consisting of heaped-up boulders, rather than coursed masonry. It then curves to the NW, turning after 20m, into a turf-covered stony bank, eventually disappearing in a hummocky birch thicket. The purpose of this wall is unknown, but may have been associated with the Camas Salach settlement. Dimensions: Total L 102m x W of boulder wall 1.20m x H 1.20m max. W of turf and stone bank 0.80 - 0.90m x H 0.70m. Orient. NW - SE. <1>

Note: Site not visible on aerial photographs and not on report map so location based on grid coordinates. (TB 11/4/25)
