Full Description
An archaeological survey of the Glencripesdale National Nature Reserve was commissioned by Scottish Natural Heritage and undertaken by J. G. Robertson in 1999.
Site 6. (Colour Plate 2). Turf and stone boundary, which seems to be the documented woodland enclosure wall, completed by 1788 under the instructions of the Duke of Argyll. (See above p. 8). This boundary runs mostly outside the perimeter fence of the NNR, but one short stretch lies just within, as shown on the sketch below. It consists mostly of a heather-coveredturf bank, but in at least two places (NGR NM 6791 6008 and NM 6718 6017), it comprisesa roughly coursed stone wall. The boundary survives, much as it is shown on the current OS1:10,000 Map, but it may have originally continued westwards to join up with the walls,Nos. 3, 4 and 10 and the turf bank, No. 5. Aerial photographs suggest that, at the E end of the extant portion, the boundary continues to Lochan Meall na Curra.
Dimen: L c. 750m x W of bank 1.10m - 1.30m x H 0.40m - 0.60m. W of wall 0.85m x H 0.70m.
