Full Description

An archaeological survey of the Glencripesdale National Nature Reserve was commissioned by Scottish Natural Heritage and undertaken by J. G. Robertson in 1999.

Site 3. Stone wall, which may, with the walls, Nos. 4 and 10, and the turf bank, No. 5, form part of the woodland enclosure wall, No. 6, built in 1787-8 under the instructions of the Duke of Argyll. (See above p. 8). It consists at its northwest end, of a well-built and well-preserved battered wall of coursed stone masonry, which runs southwestwards from the roadside for 19m to a large natural boulder. It then turns to the southeast and continues, in a more dilapidated condition, for 130m. Stopping at a very steep slope. A continuation along this line would reach the west end of the wall, No 4, suggesting that these were almost certainly part of the same boundary. This slope may have been too steep for a stone wall and the gap may have originally been filled by a turf bank, which has since slithered down the slope, or by a wooden fence. Dimen: L (of NW element) 19m x W 0.80m (top); 0.60m (base) x H 1.20m. L (of SE element) 130m x W 0.80m x H up to 1.30m, occas. only 0.30m. Orient. Mostly NW - SE.
