Full Description

A desk-based assessment and rapid walkover survey was conducted in connection with a proposed native pinewood scheme at Auchterteang by J. Wordsworth in 1996.

Site 13: This unnamed settlement is shown only partially on the current and earlier OS maps, even though there are substantial remains of a small farming settlement visible both on the ground and partially from Aerial Photographs. The remains are focused with an irregular rectangular enclosure measuring some 300m by 50m and aligned NE/SW in a sheltered come facing southeast. The western edge of the enclosure is defined by a drystone dyke and the eastern edge can only be inferred by a change in vegetation. It was probably constructed of turf. Within this enclosure showing as an area of finer grassland among the coarser grasses and heather moorland there are traces of cultivation ridges some 4-5m apart and clearance cairns. This cultivated area was concentrated at the the NE end as at least 6 buildings were recorded at the SW.

The buildings were in two distinct groups. At the southeast were two buildings measuring 11 m by 4m with one aligned NE/SW and the other NW/SE. The latter may have been a byre as it was set on a slope down to the southeast. Adjacent to a steep gulley in the west wall were 3 buildings aligned NE/SW measuring respectively 10m by 3m, 8m by 3m and 4m by 3m. Adjacent to the largest building was an irregular shaped kiln barn measuring some 8m by 3m and aligned almost east/west. The kiln was set to the east about lm lower than the chamber above and measured c2.5m in diameter. 1m from the southwest corner of the enclosure was an irregular L-shaped enclosure some 3m wide and measuring 13m by 11m. <1>
