Full Description

A desk-based assessment and rapid walkover survey was conducted in connection with a proposed native pinewood scheme at Auchterteang by J. Wordsworth in 1996.

A rectangular building 11m by 4m aligned approximately NW/SE is sited here on the SE corner of a small lochan. The walls are constructed of substantial unshaped boulders up to 0.5m in diameter and are c0.6m wide. It only survives one course high and it is unclear whether it was turf walled or has been robbed after abandonment. An enclosure 4m wide can be traced for 6m parallel to the building from its SE corner. The building was shown as roofed in 1871 and unroofed by 1902. No lochan was shown on these earlier maps and as the presence of this lochan would have made for damp foundations, this may be a modern feature. <1>
