Full Description
The gardens and grounds of Teaninich House, Alness. Although the house at Teaninch is shown on the Roy Military Survey maps with a forecourt and gardens, possibly terraced, to the rear, the designed landscape as shown on the OS 1st Edition map probably originally dates to the very late 1790s into the early 1800s, the same time as the enlargement of the house by Hugh Munro. Also shown on the OS 1st Edition map, 'Main Farm' may also have originated at that time and the adjacent distillery to the east (see MHG22771) is known to date from around 1817. A walled garden (see MHG64035) to the east of the house may also have originated at the same time. The rectilinear, more formal arrangement of the earlier gardens, as shown by Roy, were swept away to create a parkland setting for the house, accompanied with considerable tree planting especially to the northeast of the house, presumably to hide the view of the farm building complex and the distillery beyond. <1>
Much of the area outside the core environs of the house has been subject to modern re-development.
