Full Description

Historic Assynt visited this site in December 2014.

Drying Kiln on Minister's Glebe: Built into the steep south facing bank of the River Traligill close to the old ford and to the right of the modern track up Glenbain, just west of the major dyke surrounding the Manse infields. The northeast part of this large kiln is built into an excavated section of the bank and the southwest projects from it with the walls built up to create an upper bowl approx 3.7m diam at the top of the walls narrowing to a possible scarcement ledge below which the fire pit is 2m diameter. The overall external diameter is 5.20m with the lower southwest face revetted. The stoke hole faces southwest and is 1.5m long and 80cms wide and the lower walls of the kiln on either side project beyond the main arc. The site was missed during the Hidden Lives Survey when it was filled with snow and largely invisible. <1>
