Full Description
Historic Assynt visited this site in May 2016.
An outcrop of limestone with veins of marble lies high up on the ridge to the west of the Ox Byre (see MHG34506) associated with Joplin's 1799 quarrying activity at Ledbeg. Joplin is recorded as utilising this quarry for 'a highly textured marble with much colour'. It may also be the source for the limestone used in the building of the ox byre and other quarry structures below the quarry. The size of the quarry and the large amounts of limestone compared to the marble veins which survive does not suggest extensive marble deposits. Joplin's records of shipments ends in 1805 though rent was paid to the Sutherland estate until 1815. Gullies running straight down the hillside from the quarry, through a much later small plantation to the area with associated building and mound may be the remains of sledge runs. <1><2>
