Full Description

A survey was undertaken at Achmore by members of Historic Assynt in 2014.

At the foot of a south sloping terrace close to the A837 and Loch Assynt a curving level area projects from the end of a natural ridge NE into what is now a marshy area. From the west side a very small burn flows in a curving line around the north side of the level area and then south into the marshy ground. The edges of the platform may have been roughly revetted or alternatively stones from the surface of the platform have been pushed over the edge. Viewed from above the level platform's NW end appears to have on it a circular feature approx 10 - 11m in diameter. However standing on the level area this feature is at most a curving bank a mere 2 or 3cms high. The whole thing could be entirely natural or it could be the site of a severely eroded round house or the details observed could be the remnants of activity on the platform when the area was used by road gangs in the mid twentieth century or some combination of these alternatives. <1>
