Full Description
A hut circle at Torrish, one of two at this location. Recorded originally by the OS as hut circle 'B'. See MHG9868 for 'A'.
At NC 9707 1810 and NC 9722 1809 are two stone-walled hut circles (A and B) set into the north-facing hill-slope. They measure respectively 9m E-W by 7.5m N-S, and 10m E-W by 8.5m N-S within walls now reduced and overgrown with heather. The entrances, apparently of simple form, are in the east arc. On the north, downslope side of hut A is an outer revetment of boulders.
Associated cultivation is limited to sporadic rickles and heaps of stone clearance, and, rarely, wasted field walls; later post-medieval field walls intrude. One cultivation plot about 30.0m by 15.0m is visible to the east of hut B. Footings of a vaguely rectangular structure lie about 140.0m west of the same hut and again, 50.0m to the south, is a turf-covered mound, about 8.0m in diameter and 0.9m high, with a depression 3.5m wide and 0.6m deep in the top; this latter is possibly a dug-out clearance heap.
Surveyed at 1:10,560.
Visited by OS (J M) 30 November 1976.
The site is visible in vertical aerial photography, though the grid reference is slightly different to that originally recorded. <1>
