Full Description
A walkover survey was undertaken at Strathglass and Strathfarrar by Roland Spencer-Jones and Steve North of NoSAS between 2021 and 2024.
Shieling settlement:
Site S26, NH 37311 40262 GPS, NH37306 40275 (LiDAR). Arie Dhu Peter May. The most westerly of four probable shieling buildings shown on Peter May's 1757 map. This one has indistinct grassy walls, up to 0.5m high. Orientated north-south.
Site S27, NH 37317 40252 GPS, NH37312 40262 (LiDAR). Arie Dhu Peter May. This is the most westerly of a line of three probable shieling buildings shown on Peter May's 1757 map. Walls up to 0.5m high, 4 x 3 metres and rientated east-west.
Site S28, NH 37329 40270 GPS, NH33717 40280 (LiDAR). Arie Dhu Peter May. An indistinct mound or platform that probably represents the second of the middle of the three linear shieling buildings on Peter May's map. More a platform, 4 x 3 metres, than identifiable walls. (No photos)
Site S29, NH 37357 40253 GPS, NH37348 40263 (LiDAR). Arie Dhu Peter May. Clearly defined grassy walls define this, the eastern of Peter May's line of three and 5 x 2.5 metres. <1>
