Full Description
NG62SW 92 centred on 6482 2218
On the W side of the Allt a' Choire 50m from the Broadford to Heast road at 52m OD are the turf-covered remains of a considerable settlement. The remains consist of at least 2 longhouses, 3 byres and perhaps 6 small enclosures. A mains water pipe has cut through the northernmost longhouse. Numerous field dykes radiate from the settlement. Visited by C Stansfield 4 April 1990 <1>
An unroofed building is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire, Isle of Skye 1881, sheet xlvi) and on the current edition of the OS 1:10560 map (1968).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 3 December 1996
This site is visble in vertical aerial photographs lying on the west side of a burn and is clearly the remains of a larger farmstead, probably one of a number of such sites belonging to the pre-crofting township of Harrapool (see MHG27842). A cluster of buildings is shown at approximately this location on Matthew Scobie's 1766 map of the runrig townships around Harrapool. The aforementioned dykes could be contemporary but could easily be associated with the later sheepfold to the immediate northeast on the oppposite side of the burn. <2> <3>
NG 648 223 - NG 662 215 As a follow-up to the survey undertaken by ACFA in the Broadford to Ord area, in 1995 a detailed field survey was undertaken by students in the 2nd year of the Glasgow University Certificate in Field Archaeology course, in the hinterland to the south of Harrapool and southwest of Skulamus. Over fifty rectangular to sub-rectangular buildings were recorded, varying in building material from turf to stone, together with associated small enclosures, field banks, rig cultivation and sheep-washes, indicative of pre- and post-clearance land use. <4> [Probably included within the survey area - IS-L 15/09/2025]
Judging by the latest available vertical aerial photographs (2023) the water pipe which had been cut through the northernmost long house had recently been dug up and replaced, possibly causing more damage. <5>
