Full Description

A probable late medieval-early post-medieval deer park to the immediate south of Cawdor Castle. The Timothy Pont map of the Moray Firth coast and littoral shows an area of woodland to the south of Cawdor Castle (labelled 'Castell of Caldell') which is labelled 'Parck of Caldell'. The boundaries of the park are shown as being two watercourses, the eastern being that known today as the Riereach Burn and the western the Allt Dearg, though watercourses are not labelled by Pont. The southern boundary is shown as a faint double line, possibly indicating an earthwork which may correspond to a bank and ditch (the former normally topped by a palisade fence or hedge) which runs between to the two watercourses. <1>

Roy's Military Survey also shows this area of woodland, with the southern boundary shown as a red line. Roy's illustrative conventions included buildings and man-made constructions with that colour. This would mean that the boundary was probably an earthwork, palisade or wall and would therefore agree with Pont's depiction. <2>
