Full Description
Rock art panels near Ben Loyal.
Two panels of potential cup marked rock art were reported by G Murphy of Nature Scot in 2021 during a walkover survey in advance of a proposed peatland restoration scheme on land at Ben Loyal, Sutherland. <1>
The site was subsequently visited and recorded by A Thompson and A Cockcroft of NoSAS in 2022. The panel is on an isolated outcrop of rock which emerges from an extensive level area of rough boggy ground. It is about 25m long (SW to NE) and the area of exposed rock faces to the SE, towards the peaks of Ben Loyal. The rock face is approximately 25m x 8m, sloping at 25-30 deg SE. Due to vegetation cover the rock surface is visible as a series of exposures. Cup markings are present on some of the exposed parts of the rock face, and at the top of the outcrop. The vegetation was not cleared. 43 simple cup marks, and two cup marks with rings, were observed over eight exposures. It is probable that there are other markings either under the vegetation or not seen during a relatively short visit. The rock itself is locally unusual, being yellowish brown, with a layered appearance, identified as a peridotite layered dyke. <2>
