Full Description

Stone rows to the west of the Allt Badaidh Bhaird, Sutherland.

A stone row has been reported to HES by S Graham at NC 63707 58791, 120m W of the Allt Badaidh Bhaird.
Information from HES Designations (RM) to HES Archaeological Survey (GFG), 25 February 2022

This setting of multiple stone rows is situated in peat and heather-grown moorland about 1.4km E of Dallcharn and 500m SE of the A836 road but it is most easily reached by following an animal path from a vehicle track 200m to the WSW. The setting occupies the slightly concave surface of a rounded knoll with a generally S-facing aspect overlooking an area of peat cutting, the edge of which lies 17m to the S but only 8m at the WNW, where a small cutting has encroached upon the knoll.

The visible remains are obscured by well-established heather and peat at least 0.5m in depth. The setting comprises at least 15 roughly parallel rows of edge-set slabs spread over a slightly dished area of about 29m from N to S by 27m transversely. The rows lie between 1m and 1.5m apart, with the longest visible row of six stones extending for 16m in a line from NNW to SSE. The slabs, of which 33 were identified on the date of visit, are generally aligned with the rows, though some are square or triangular on plan. The largest measure up to 0.6m in length, 0.4m in width and up to 0.4m in height.

The setting was surveyed with differential GPS and only those stones detectable at the surface were recorded.
Visited by HES Archaeological Survey and Designations (G F Geddes, R McDonald) 26 April 2022

The site was Scheduled by Historic Environment Scotland with effect from 16/11/2022. <1>
