Full Description
A still bothy at Loch nam Bonnach.
A previously unrecorded illicit still bothy was discovered in the hills 5kms to the west of Beauly in May 2021 by members of NoSAS. It was close to a small burn on the west side of Loch nam Bonnach at an altitude of 295m and was recessed into a steep NE facing slope. The structure was grossly covered in heather and moss and comprised two compartments: the main south compartment was sub rectangular in shape and c3.5m x 3.5m internally. Its rear wall was recessed into the steep slope and between 2m and 4m high, the front and north walls were of rough stone construction, between 0.5m and 1m height and 1 to 1.5m thick. The entrance in the east wall was indistinct and perhaps 1 to 2m in width; the rectangular platform c5m x 2m to the north is partly recessed into the slope, a number of large boulders defining its SW corner. Its extent is indistinct at the north end. <1>
