Full Description

Several redundant boundary-dykes were identified in the rough ground above Brae Stein, of which four are recorded here since they appear to represent stages in the definition of the farm of Stein and latterly the crofting-township of Brae Stein, prior to the modern wire fence and the 1st edition and 2nd edition of the Ordnance Survey maps of 1880 and 1904 (Island of Skye &c., Inverness-shire, 1880, 1904, sheet xv).

1. NG 2707 5676 to 2686 5705 Stein Farm boundary
2. NG 2733 5686 to 2704 5713 Stein Farm boundary
3. NG 2695 5703 to a junction with No. 2 at NG 2704 5713,
Fasach Farm boundary
4. NG 2710 5677 to 2694 5709 Crofting township boundary and part of longer boundary defining the limit of Brae Stein and Lusta at an earlier period
5. NG 2691 5670 to 2655 5704 Crofting township boundary

The two farm boundaries are depicted upon on a survey of the farms of Fasach and Stein of 1790 carried out for the British Fisheries Society (SRO RHP 11785). It appears that boundary No. 2 is later than No. 3, which is later than No. 1.
Visited by RCAHMS (PJD) 22 November 1990.
