Full Description
An enigmatic mound 11m or more in diameter and standing 1.8m high beside the A837 east of Loch Awe. It is crescent shaped, bracken and moss covered mound but surrounded by a wide area of heather and grass devoid of bracken so that it stands out conspicuously. Superficially it appears to be a burnt mound but it is larger than most in the area, stands well above nearby burns and the central hollow seems to run away from the nearest burn to the north. The central hollow also contains loose quartzite stones in its sides and along the bottom but no sign of shattered stone or charcoal. Several natural mounds in the area which are close to the road show signs of being quarried for road building but their vegetation cover is identical to the surrounding terrain. A third possibility is a robbed or quarried cairn. Size, vegetation cover and presence of quartzite stones make it similar to some of the smaller cairns in the vicinity. <1>
