Full Description
The Loch Dubh Farmstead is on the edge of one of a series of SE facing terraces. The longhouse is aligned NW - SE, 11.90m x 3.25m internally, with remnants of a possible cross wall at the mid point. The SE end is the byre and although the drain cannot be seen in the floor the culvert below the end wall is clearly visible discharging over a steep drop to lower ground. Later animal pens now fill much of the interior. Parallel to the byre end of the longhouse and 2m to the south a very fragmentary rounded rectangular foundation survives overlaid on a slightly different orientation by what appears to be a small drying kiln with a bowl approx 2m diameter with an additional 3m of walling along both sides of a possible flue. The underlying foundation would have been approx 5m x 3m. A few metres further south a sub-oval/rectangular foundation 5m x 3m internally is perched on an outcrop and its exposed and windy site suggests it was a barn. Elsewhere over several SE facing terraces on the same hillside a large number of clearance cairns and animal pens. On one of the lower terraces at NC 07484 24284 there is a 5m long by 3.8m roughly rectangular wide foundation of large boulders below a cliff with a later animal pen in the SE corner. A well constructed track leads NW from the area to join the Ardroe road. <1>
