Full Description

A chambered cairn at Srath a' Chrom-Uillt, Assynt.

Historic Assynt visited this site in March 2015.

Chambered Cairn. 15m diameter circular mound of stones 4m high built on the crest of a strangely eroded limestone ridge overlooking a tributary of the Crom Allt. The tops of some of the orthostats of the chamber are visible and the chamber appears to be full of collapsed rubble. There are some signs of a southeast facing collapsed entrance passage. The deeply eroded ridge has a number of steep sided gulleys, former water channels, swallow holes and related features which seem to emerge from under the cairn. <1>

The site was scheduled by Historic Environment Scotland with effect from 24/10/2018. The monument comprises the remains of a chambered cairn dating from the Neolithic period, probably built between 4000 BC and 2500 BC. It is visible as a round mound measuring approximately 15m in diameter and 4m high. There is a substantial amount of cairn material remaining and some large orthostats of the chamber are visible. The cairn appears to be broadly aligned southeast-northwest with a possible southeast facing passage. The site is located within boggy moorland south of Loch Urigill and just west of the Allt Cromalt river at around 175m above sea level. <2>
