Full Description

The remains of a bank, possibly the remains of a turf dyke, were recorded during an NTS pre-afforestation survey of Kintail and West Affric in 1997. It was located on the north side of an unnamed burn that runs southwestwards to Loch Duich, within a modern enclosure to the east of Kintail Lodge Hotel. It was spread to c.0.8m wide and c.0.3m high. On a terrace towards the east edge of the enclosure were the remains of rigs or feanagan. This seems to be part of a field system now largely destroyed. It may have linked with the invershiel/Uchd an t-Sabhail boundary (see MHG5936) to define the area of rigs. <1>

NOTE: It is not at all clear where this dyke actually was as the closest 'burn' to the grid reference provided appears to be more of a drainage ditch and the photograph provided appears to show a larger feature than described running along its western side which may be nothing more that the upcast from the ditch. The map showing the location of the feature (with '49') is also of no help as it doesn't actually dilineate the feature itself. Vertical aerial photographs certainly show dykes in the area [IS-L 16/03/2026].

A short stretch of a dyke, approximately 56m in length, is visible on aerial photography to the northwest of the grid reference provided in <1>. <2>
