During works in 1853 on the site of the former Georgian courthouse on the corner of High Street and Church Street, Inverness, evidence for probable medieval occupation was exposed.
In the excavations going on at the site of the old prison, at the corner of Bridge Street and Church Street, ancient tanpits were found, abounding in broken horns and bones of deer, and in one spot the remains of a pig-stye had been preserved! The vertebral bone of a whale had also been turned up. <1>
