Full Description

Site 6: 50m SSE of the enclosure at 4 is a well-preserved oval shieling hut with walling of mostly large boulders, but with up to 3 courses of drystone walling. A small pen or store1m by 2m wide lies on the NE side. The entrance is on the N. 14m to the E are the remnants of a store 2m diameter built against a large boulder. 7m to the N is a turf and stone pen or store 2m in diameter.
Vivid green patches on the flatter ground, as shown on the photograph, may mark former turf walled shielings, or merely be resting stances for animals ruminating. <1>

Two shieling huts were noted by WCAS in a 2012 DBA and walkover survey in advance of a woodland creation scheme. The southern shieling hut was located on the east side of a gorge and on a narrow terrace, facing northwest. It was a stone or turf-built shieling hut under bracken measuring 6m north to south by 4.5m over walls 1m wide and up to 0.7m high. There was a 0.7m-wide entrance in the north side and it may have overlied an early structure. The northern shieling hut was located 8m to the northeast of the first. It was a small, boulder-built shieling under bracken and heather measuring 4.5m northwest to southeast by 4m over walls 0.6m wide and 0.4m high. There was a possible 0.6m-wide entrance in the east side. These two shielings correspond with Wordsworth's Site 6. <2>
