Full Description

An enclosed arrangement of military buildings is depicted on the 5th edition Ordnance Survey map c.1959. A site visit by a member of HCAU staff in 2009 confirmed these to be of Second World War type. The purpose of the buildings is not known. There is also a square, still roofed, building of grey brick or concrete construction to the south at the entrance to the field adjacent to the road. <1> <2>

One of the hut bases at the southern end of the site is to be removed in the course of construction of a new house. Photographs were submitted to the HER as part of a planning condition. <3>

There are three additional concrete bases of similar looking type and dimensions in the field immediately to the west visible in vertical aerial photography taken in 2005 (as part of the 'Millennium Map' series) and 2009. However, these are not shown on the OS 5th Edition map. By the time the next available vertical aerial photography was taken in 2018 all three bases had been removed, although scrub removal had also revealed a fourth base hard against the field boundary. <4> <5> <6>
