Full Description

NG35NE 9 397 576.

(NG 397576) Depopulated township and lazy-bed cultivation, (Visible on RAF air photographs CPE/Scot/UK/175: 1325-6) but nothing shown on OS 6" map, Inverness-shire, 1st ed., (1875) 1875 so evidently deserted long before that date.
Visited by OS (A C) 19 December 1960.

This depopulated run-rig township, which is situated on a shelf at the W end of Glen Hinnisdale just E. of the road from Portree-Uig, comprises some 20 buildings with yards, etc., and is surrounded by extensive lazy-beds and enclosures. The houses are of two types. The first is a small, simple building contructed of small drystone walling with rounded ends measuring internally up to 20ft in length and about 6ft in width. It normally contains one door, placed either in the sides or ends, but seldom possesses internal sub-divisions. These houses occur singly or attached to large buildings when they are probably byres.
The second type is of similar construction but measures internally up to 40ft in length and about 12ft in width, contains one or more doors, and is subdivided into compartments. It occurs singly, or has a byre attached, or forms part of a multiple layout with yards.
Buildings of these types in the Isle of Skye are found only in the run-rig township and contemporary farms though some survive as byres or outbuildings in the later 'improvements' townships.
Visited by OS (A C) 15 April 1961.
