Full Description

This site is a prominent steep-sided and artificially-modified circular knoll, formerly enclosed within an extension to the 18th-century walled garden of Lochletter House. The building presently on top of the knoll is designated as a Category B listed 18th-century garden pavilion (LB49692). A field visit on 7 January 2017 concluded that there may have been an earlier larger structure on top of the hill, possibly a medieval motte. There is some evidence of stonework remains on the top of the knoll which are seeming unrelated to the pavilion. Further investigation would be needed to prove this hypothesis. Lochletter is named as one of the Crown Estates held by Sir Robert Chisholm, Constable of Urquhart Castle from 1359. John Grant, first of Corrimony, later received the estates in a royal charter of 1509 which references ‘the 40 shilling lands of
Lochletter’ (Mackay, Glen Urquhart and Glenmoriston,1893). <1>
