Full Description

NG 6484 2316: This disused corn mill was probably built in the 19th century. It is in good condition and in use as a barn. The mill machinery has been dismantled and the lade is dry.
Visited by OS (CFW) 13 June 1961

Cornmill, NG 648 232. 19th century. A rectangular 1-storey rubble building, now a store. In 1 gable is a beautifully built circular axle hole. <1>

Also known as Strath Mill or Upper Harrapool Mill.
A corn mill was marked on or very near this site on Stobie's map of Strath, 1766 (Macdonald Estate papers RHP22110). Four buildings labelled 'Mill' are marked on John Blackadder's map of Harrapool 1811 (MacDonald Estate Papers RHP5998/16 & 24).
The building is currently (2011) the Skye Serpentarium.
Strath rentals and maps are in the Macdonald Estate Papers, Museum of the Isles, Clan Donald Skye, Armadale. The maps are also on www.ambaile.org.uk <2>

The Strath townships map by Stobie shows the mill to the north of the location of the current former mill building (see MHG64651), closer to the coast and just to the south of where the coast road used to run. Blackadder's map shows four buildings, the northernmost of which may be the building shown on Stobie. One of the others, now just to the north of a new road to replace the coast road, may be the current mill building which subsequently replaced the original [IS-L 11/09/2025]
