Full Description

Sites recorded during a survey of the townships of North and South Screapadal plus the surrounding area carried out by the Association of Certificated Field Archaeologists (ACFA) in April 1998 as part of a continuing programme of recording the physical remains of human activity on the island of Raasay (Macdonald and Scott Wood 1997).

Feature 11; Enclosure . Above Eaglais Breige, on a natural platform in the cliff face, 130m above OD, is a well-hidden enclosure measuring about 30m by 20m. The,edge of the platform was protected by sections of turf and stone walling - 'c' and 'd' - between massive rocks. Section 'c' at the south east was much reduced and measured 3.3m long, 0.2m high with a spread of 0.8m. Curving round the north east corner, section 'd' was more substantial. It totalled 13m in length and varied from 1.7m to 2.5m in height with a spread of 0.8m. There were two possible entrances through the dyke with that at the apex of the corner clearly connecting with the modern track from below. Further smaller and more putative, rock shelters were perceived up-slope among the tumble from the cliff face. <1>
