Full Description
Thumbnail picture of group of 4 bait mortars, as described below.
A M Fox, Highland Council, 22/09/00
NM68SE 3 671 837.
Two cupped stones are situated on the seashore, one on each side of a promontory called Rhu Garve (Rough Cape) between Borrodale (NM 69 85) and Gaoidal (NM 67 84) about 4 miles from Arisaig Inn (NM 65 86). They are oblong blocks of mica schist lying flat on the rocks a little above spring tide mark, and are of a type which have been, and are still used, for holding shell bait for fishing.
W Jolly 1882.
In the area centred on NM 671 837 there are 11 cup-shaped hollows in groupings of 6, 4 and 1. From their positions on rock directly above the sea it can reasonably be assumed that they are mortars for fish-bait. (See similar site on Isle of Carna - NM65NW 1).
Visited by OS (J M) 2 June 1974.
