Full Description
The possible site of a battle between the Picts and The Danes on the Raised beach stretching between Ardmore Point and Edderton. It is thought that the Danes landed on the beach below Cartomie. It is thought that the Picts used both Cavalry and infantry to secure a victory at heavy costs. The supposition that cavalry was used is based on the depiction of a horseman on the cross slab in Edderton churchyard. Following the battle it is thought that Carros (or Carius), the Prince of Denmark was buried beside the standing stone at Clach Charaidh (NH78NW0002). It is further claimed that local place name evidence (such as Balleigh -leech's or Physicians town; Gluich (Glaodhaich) - Lamentation; Rhanich - Lamentation) indicate that the Picts suffered heavy casualties. The cross slab that stands in Edderton cemetry is thought to commemorate this battle (NH78SW0003).
