Full Description
A pre-afforestation survey of a proposed WGS area for natural regeneration revealed slight evidence for post-medieval and later sheep farming settlement at the SE end of Glen Scaddle. Woodland management was noted both in oak plantation and slight traces of possible charcoal-burning platforms at the east end of the area at NN 0090 6800.
Site 1: Adjacent to a mature oak tree that has possibly been pollarded is a semi¬circular platform of c4m diameter. This is very ill-defined and has no stone revetting. However it could possibly be a charcoal-burning platform obscured by slump deposits. (see photograph in report) At least two similar possible platforms can be seen in the vicinity, but these are not universal and are not associated with the denser oakwood to the east. The low density of oak trees and the uncertain form of these features suggest some hesitation in interpreting these platforms as charcoal burning stances. <1>
Note; NGR in report is incorrect by 1km to the west (TB 18/8/25)
