In 1935 a cross-slab, allegedly brought from Applecross, lay against the north wall of the Youth Hostel in Cannich. The red sandstone slab, which measured 7 feet in length by 2 feet 3 inches in width, and 3 inches in thickness, bore an incised cross upon a graduated base. The intersection of the arms was formed by a circle which enclosed the letters HIS. Four small circular cusped hollows were set around the edge of the circle. The upper arm bore a triangle, and the shaft the figure of a dove flying downwards. In the top right-hand corner of the stone there was a small cross within a circle, the initials AMC, and the date 1860.
The slab was said to have been bought about twelve years earlier by Mr A Falconer, hotel keeper of Tomich, at the sale of the effects of Mrs Chisholm, Glassburn House, the widow of Mr A M Chisholm, whose initials appear on the stone. Mr Chisholm is understood to have removed the stone from Applecross with the intention of erecting it as a tombstone for himself.
