Full Description

Site of the former township of Glascory.

The remains of a number of buildings thought to belong to the township were recorded by Wordsworth Archaeology Services in 1997 during an archaeological and historical assessment of the NTS Kintail and West Affric Estate at least partly in advance of a potential woodland creation. Set on a gentle slope to the west of a modern concrete foundation (c20m by c3.5m and shown on the 1971 OS map and built against the substantial drystone enclosure) are the remains of at least 8 buildings, presumed to the the township of Glascory. The walls have been almost completely robbed out leaving a series of rectangular platforms measuring (from north to south) c9m by c3m; c7m by c3m; c10m by c3m; c6m by c2.5m; c7m by c3m; c6m by c3m; and c18m by c3m. The most southerly building was probably in two parts and had an ?enclosure c12m by c7m to the west. All measurements must be seen as approximate because of the extent of the wall robbing - they were presumably robbed to supply stone for the dyke to the east. The buildings were all aligned northwest/southeast parallel to the river and the line of Glenlichd. <1>
