Full Description
(NH 6695 3576) Standing stone - not outcrop or erratic - on a knoll. Other large slabs around but no indications of a cairn.
Information from A A Woodham to OS 9 August 1963.
NH 6703 3580 This stone oriented N-S is 1.2 m. long by 1.3m. high and is 0.4m. wide and it has a rounded slightly pointed top, no marks of any description were seen on it. It does not appear to be a true standing stone and could possibly be an erratic.
Visited by OS (W D J) 5 September 1963.
The site was visited and photographed by S Farrell in 2005 during a pre-forestry felling survey in Inverarnie Woods. It was recorded as being as previously described, though heavy with moss. As noted by the OS there were no signs of any other stones and it may have been an erratic. <1>
The site should have been visited in 2015 during a walkover survey by CFA Archaeology in advance of a proposed 275 kV OHL between Knocknagael and Tomatin. Unfortunately it was not possible to access this area during the field survey due to land-owner access restrictions and the baseline condition of the possible standing stone was unknown. <2>
The site was visited in 2017 during an additional walkover survey by AOC Archaeology Group in advance of the proposed 275 kV OHL between Knocknagael and Tomatin. It was found to be a large upright slab within a forest plantation. The stone had been knocked over during work and a small area was cleared to allow investigation. It measured approximately 1.4-1.5m across (N-S), 1.8m tall 0.4m thick. Slightly curved/pointed at top with no sign of working marks/decoration. It was leaning at approximately 45° angle towards the west. The socket hole cut was visible as a void below the stone. It Appeared to be steep sided about 0.3m deep with a rounded base. The dimensions seemed to be the same as the base of the stone suggesting a close fit. The stone appeared to have tilted on the spot when disturbed. <3>
Following forestry clearance the standing stone is visible in vertical aerial photographs. <4> <5>
