NN79SW 2 7000 9370 to 7145 9499. MR 2 (formerly Lin 501 [part of]).
Wade's road takes an almost exactly straight course, passing Phones House, a shooting lodge. It is well maintained and drivable as far as this. Thereafter it is readily traceable and walkable, but liable to be wet in places. It passes round the edge of a birchwood with Loch Phones, now dammed, immediately below. The route from Etteridge heading up to Kirk of Kingussie, as seen currently, was constructed in 1763 (Salmond 1938).
J B Salmond 1938; W Taylor 1976; J and A Baker 1982.
N of Phoines the route of the military road lies along a badly eroded dirt track, stretches of which are very boggy and churned up. Passing an unnamed loch at Druim nan Toll it traverses a wooded area. Undateable patches of cobbling or paving are visible along the track.
M Logie (Highland Council) 1997; NMRS MS 1007/2.
