Summary

Possible site of burial ground although this is interpretation is based on local tradition. Some archaeological features of unknown type were revealled through sheep-induced errosion.

Full Description

In area that is traditionally associated with burials, sheep erosion of side of hill is revealing features in section. Large slabs that form some kind of flooring are being eroded out over a stretch of perhaps 5m. Under this is a narrow dark deposit up to c10cm deep. Cutting through this was one distinct feature, parallel straight sides c33-40 cm wide and to the depth of c50cm+. See photographs.
The features lie on top of a prominent high knoll beside a stream. The top of the rest of the knoll is flat and although there is some other erosion on sides and possible older cuttings into the surface (now deeply grass covered) there are no distinct structures under strong summer grass. The site would, however, be a very good defensive/lookout position with views up the strath in both directions.
The local tradition of burials might otherwise indicate a barrow site taking a dominant place in the landscape, but no evidence of this on the day of visit - HAW 8/2004
