Full Description
An 'Infants Burial Ground' is depicted on the OS 1st Edition Map.
J Aitken : 27/2/2004
When the rectified OS 1st Edition map is adjusted the centroid NGR should be at 183335 858135, rather than 183360 858170 and has been adjusted accordingly [IS-L 27/07/2016]. Unfortunately an access track to the property to the north now runs straight through the middle of the site.
A walkover survey and desk-based assessment for the National Trust estate at Torridon was carried out by J Wordsworth and J Harden.
Mary Macdonald notes that the site name means 'the little mound of the burial' and that it is one of a group of mounds around Loch Torridon which are associated with the burial of unbaptised infants. It is actually quite a substantial mound and is recorded on the 1875 OS survey as an 'Infants Burial Ground'. Aligned NNW-SSE, it survives as a high rounded sandy mound c22m by CI 1m and up to c2.5m high. The side of the mound is partially exposed on the west. There has been some stone dumping especially on the east side but there is a suggestion of stone facing on the south & east. On the west side stone kerbing appears to be part of a silted up drain edging the road. It is possible some flat stones near the top may be short grave markers. There is perhaps a kerb of stones on the top of the mound forming an enclosure c17m by c6m but this may be a misinterpretation of random stones. At much the same location a roofless structure is shown here on the current OS map but it no longer survives. It probably measured c9m by c4m. <1>
