Full Description

There are about 12 hectares of ridged land to the E of the farm of Bay from NG 272 548 in the N to NG 272 537 in the S, most of which occupy the location of fields on the 1810 estate map (SRO RHP 8726/4). Much of the ridged land is enclosed within globular fields, whose shape matches that of many of the fields on the 1810 map, and includes the field at NG 274 526, some 1km to the S (see NG25SE 8.13). Some globular fields although they have been ploughed flat, still display plough-grooves (eg NG 273 542). The rig is spade-dug, lazy-bedding, rather than plough-rig. The width of the rig is between 3m and 5m and it stands up to about 0.4m in height, with steep sides and generally no more than about 70m in length. Often the gap between the ridges is broad since each rig takes a course designed to deal with the idiosyncracies of the local topography, although generally they run across the contour. A section through one group of ridges is visible on the W side of the road to Bay, however, no buried soil was observed.
