Full Description

Large mound reported in wood following partial clearance of rhododendrons.

Site visit by HAW 30/10/2002. Mound in area of GR. Not a natural feature, though probably blends into natural slope at W end. Over 100 m long and over 5m high in places. Still tree covered, but looks as though east end may be built in part of piled stones (large). Middle section (on N) seems to be more largely soil formed and W end combination of large and small stones and earth (ie where tree falls make it possible to see anything). On the S side a substantial wall approaches the mound at a slight angle and runs beside and then beyond it some distance. In places this wall is built of large boulders stacked two deep and up to three high. On the N side a rectangular heap of stones approaches the mound at right angles. This area is shown on 1st ed OS as woodland, with nothing else marked in this area. These are obviously pre woodland features, but date and functions unknown. Recommend a fuller examination and survey/location of the features.
