Full Description

NH62NW 39 6462 2723.

The remains of this farmstead lie in improved ground on the haughland of the River Nairn, about 150m NE of the present farmsteading of West Croachy. Four buildings and an enclosure can be distinguished. The buildings range from 10.4m to 19.6m in length and from 5m to 5.6m in breadth over walls reduced to stony banks spread to 1.5m in thickness and nowhere standing more than 0.3m high. One building (USN93 422) has three compartments and there are traces of an extension or outshot, 7.8m long, at the NE end of another (USN93 425), but otherwise the structures are too poorly preserved to enable details to be distinguished.
A farmstead, named 'West Croachy', is depicted at this location on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874, sheet xxxi). Three roofed buildings are depicted, grouped around a yard, two of which can still be identified on the ground (USN93 423 and 424). The other two buildings recorded (USN93 422 and 425) are not depicted. By the time of the 2nd edition (1905) the farm had moved to its present location and none of the older buildings were depicted at that date. (USN93 422-5)
Visited by RCAHMS (SDB) 7 May 1993.
