Full Description

Remains of settlement shown on 1st edition OS map. Hyperlinked photos taken by Nevis Hulme of presumed stack-bases, due to stones in centres and landscape context. Information as follows;

"The photographs were taken on no.6 at Allt Grìsean (NG 744855, sheet 19 of 1:50 000 O.S. map) approximately 9 miles from Gairloch, Wester Ross. The immediate area is known to have been relatively important for pre-crofting settlement with around nine ruins of houses on or near the croft. Much of the surrounding land was cultivated prior to the crofts being laid out, evidence being the estate plan of 1845. A lime kiln is indicated nearby on
the 1875 first edition of the O.S. map and is still evident.

I have annotated the photographs to show the approximate limits of each circle. 'Cear1' was taken from the southeast and 'Cear2' from the northwest. Circle A is from 2.7 to 2.9 metres in diameter and circle B is from 2.3 to 2.5 metres.
Each circle appears to be bordered by larger stones and the surface of the remainder has possibly been paved with smaller stones. The distribution of the stones does not seem to be as a result of the collapse of walls. There is no indication of these structures being in use, e.g. to help keep hay dry, from an aerial photograph of the 1950s nor have any of those who I have asked any knowledge of them."
