Full Description
The Coffin Well is a coffin shaped basin set within a small burn and constructed of roughly coursed, undressed local stone. The narrow end supplies the outlet downhill. The basin is about 1.37m long, lying up / down slope, and about 0.3 m at the lower end and 0.6m at upper end. It is about 0.2m deep.
It originally seems to have provided access to the point where the burn rises. However it now rises further up the slope in the roadway.
The well was probably used by passers by on the track above the well site which was according to the Camerons a coffin way and also an important N - S route.
They also mentioned seeing the remains of cottages higher up the hill, but I did not see them myself and they are not shown on the 1st ed OS map.
Visited by John Wood on 9 August 2002 with Mrs W Cameron of Grianan, Moy and her father who had known the well for many years as a local forester but knew of no local stories or traditions.
