Full Description

An archaeological walkover survey of a single, distinct area of proposed planting of natural woodland regeneration was carried by M. Wildgoose at Coille an Torran, Raasay in 1999.

Site 25: On a natural ledge, under birch woodland, overlooking the north shore of Loch Arnish is a ruined stone built U shaped enclosure. The enclosure measures 3.0m in diameter over walls 1.0m thick. The interior face of the wall consists of large, thin slabs set on their edges, while the outer face and core of the wall is built in the conventional manner. The entrance or open end of the enclosure is 1.1m wide and faces south, to the shore. <1>

Raasay Survey 2000. Site 52: Situated close to the crags above the south shore of Ard an Torrain is a very ruinous U-shaped enclosure. It lies on a natural ledge in an area of birch woodland. The stone built ruin measures 3.0m in diameter externally and has walls 1.0m thick. The interior face of the wall is constructed of thin stones set upright while the core and outer face are of more conventional dry stone construction. The open end, or entrance, is 1.10m wide at the south end facing the shore. <2>
