Full Description
Raasay Survey 2000. Site 50: Situated just above the shore line on the north side of Ard an Torrain, due south of the southern tip of Eilean Fladday, is an area which has had an attempt at clearance some time in the past. This is evidenced by a group of 3 or 4 rather nebulous clearance cairns about 1.0m in diameter, on the edges of irregular patches of slightly improved ground.
To the northeast of the cleared area lies a cairn which has been robbed out at the east end. Tumble at the west end appears to form a "tail". With no defining edge the shape and dimensions of the cairn were difficult to assess. The tumble is spread over an area 9m long, but the main accumulation of stone covers a roughly circular area 5.30m by 5.20m and 1.10m high.
About 50 metres to the southeast of the cairn, on a slight rise, is a round feature which is 3m in diameter. A single course of stone is visible in places in the low circular turf bank. The dimensions of this feature and the apparent lack of an entrance might tend to suggest that this may have been a iodhlainn to store the crop grown in the area rather than a hut circle. At several points around this area there are short stretches of crudely built dry stone dykeing cutting off the gullies to prevent livestock from escaping from the area. At the head of the narrow beach there is another crudely built dry stone dyke curving round the top end. <1>
