Full Description

An archaeological walkover survey of a single, distinct area of proposed planting of natural woodland regeneration was carried by Martin Wildgoose at Coille an Torran, Raasay in 1999.

Site 2: Lying on a south-west facing slope at the foot of a massive rocky outcrop is a beautifully built, circular stone pen. A single birch tree stands just to the south of the site. This well preserved monument still stands to its original height of 1.5m around its entire circuit. It is 9.0m in diameter over walls that are 1.0m thick at the base and 0.7m thick at the wall head. A well built entrance faces to the south-west down the slope. <1>

Raasay Survey 2000. Site 29: A small enclosure, or possibly bothy, 6.0m by 4.50m internally. The walls are approximately 1.50m high extending to 2.0m at the back where they are built on a rock outcrop. The 0.80m wide entrance is at the southwest utilising a massive boulder, probably fallen from the cliff, on its south side. The dry stone construction of the walls is of a considerably higher standard internally than externally. Adjoining the west of this structure a wall butting on to the main structure connects 5m away to the main dyke running the length of the col, thus possibly forming part of another small enclosure. On the west side of the dyke a small stone lined rectangular feature cut into the turf could possibly be the vestigial remains of a sheep dip. <2>
