Full Description

Raasay Survey 2000. Site 26: A well built track 2m wide leads down from the coastal footpath to the shore of Loch Amish, south of Torran. A natural gap between the sloping slabs of rock has been utilised to form a slipway. The seaward end of a large smooth inclined slab has been cleared of rocks while higher up gaps have been paved with large blocks of stone. A wooden ramp has been placed over these to facilitate boat handling. On the north side a length of wall has been built to form a wharf. Beyond the ramp is a makeshift shelter, its back wall formed by the rock face to the south. Recycled telegraph poles have been used to form the corners and corrugated iron sheeting supported by more telegraph poles makes the roof. The sides of the shelter are open. The covered area is about 3m by 4m and 4m high. Another corrugated iron roofed structure lies about l lm to the north. A small stone built hut 3.80m by 2.70m externally is currently in use as a store for fishing equipment. Electric power and the piles of equipment lying about would indicate all of Feature 26 is still currently in use. <1>
