Full Description

Raasay Survey 2000. Site 15: Between two areas of rocky outcrop to the southwest of Sithean Mor lies an area of sloping ground which, although largely free of stone and heather, does not appear to have been improved. On the edge of this area is a structure built of large stones, some of which are clearly rockfall. Where freestanding, the wall is 0.30m to 0.40m high but where revetted into the hillside it is up to 0.80m. The structure is roughly oval, about 3.50m by 2.50m, with a possible entrance to the north facing the hillside. Within the eastern half of the structure a small pen has been built using the original back wall as one side with additional walling, lm high, constructed of angular stones from the field. A probably contemporary annexe at the east side has walls standing to 0.40m. Although as it now exists the structure appears to have been adapted for 19th Century shieling use, the heavily built base is suggestive of earlier, possibly even medieval, construction - perhaps a small farmstead in an area of reasonably good ground open to the southeast. <1>
